Getting The Most From Your Audio Tune Lesson mp3 Files (Page 2) Back To Page 1

With QuickTime: Make sure you have a recent version.  I'm using the free Version 7.6.6.  Open the player, pull down the "Edit" menu and select "Preferences," then "QuickTime Preferences."  Click on the "File Types" tab and make sure the "MP3" box is checked.

  • Looping The Files:
    • Open the directory where you see the 11 mp3 files for the tune you want to work on.  Locate it on your screen next to the QuickTime player.
    • Double click the file you want to play and it will start.  While it is playing, hit Ctrl/L.  This activates the looping feature in QuicTime.  This file will now loop for you.
    • To change phrases, just double click on the list item you want and the player will switch to that file.  You'll have to hit Ctrl/L again to reactivate the loop feature.

  • Controlling Playback Speed:  Pull down the "Window" menu and select "Show A/V Controls."
    • The A/V Controls popup window will appear.  At the bottom right you'll see a horizontal bar that lets you adjust playback speed.
    • The lower limit is half speed.  You can speed up to 3X if you want.
    • The sound quality suffers a little when you slow down or speed up, but it's plenty good enough for learning purposes.

With iTunes: Make sure you have a recent version.  I'm using Version 9.  Open one of your tune directories in your "Audio Tune Lessons" folder.  You should see an mp3 file for the entire tune, and 10 more mp3 files for the parts and phrases.

  • Looping The Files:  The plan here is to put all your files for a single tune into it's own playlist.
    • Pull down the "File" menu and select "New Playlist Folder."  Title your new folder with the name of your tune (ex. Angeline The Baker). You now have an empty playlist.
    • Open your specific Tune Lesson directory where all 11 mp3 files are located, and copy all of them into the emply playlist.  You should now have 11 new mp3 files in your new playlist.
    • Now find the "loop" button at the bottom left of your screen (it's the third button in, next to the shuffle button).
    • Click the loop button once to highlite it and again to activate it.  You should see a small "1" on the button.  Now any file in your list will loop repeatedly when you play it.
    • To change phrases, just double click on the list item you want and the player will switch to that file.

  • Controlling Playback Speed:  Unfortunately, iTunes does not currently allow you to vary the speed of playback.  If you don't think you'll be needing the "slow down" feature, iTunes is still a good option because it's easy to use and it's sound quality is very good.
