How To Choose The Right Video Format--mp4 or wmv?

All the Video Tune Lessons are available in either of 2 video formats:  mp4 (for QuickTime Player) or wmv (for Windows Media Player). You need to choose one or the other when you order your Video Tune Lessons. Here's the info you need to make the right decision.

MP4:  The mp4 files are smaller, they download fast, and the video quality is excellent.

  • They work great on any mac.

  • They also work great on any PC, as long as it has itunes/QuickTime installed.
    • If your PC has iTunes installed, it also has QuickTime unless you specifically disabled the QuickTime installation when you installed iTunes.

  • You can also play mp4 files on your PC in Windows Media Player, but the player's slow down feature doesn't work with these files.  You can only vary playback speed in the Windows Media Player using wmv files.

WMV:  The wmv files are larger than the mp4 files, so they download slower.  The video quality is good, but not as good as the mp4 format.

  • They work great on any PC that has Windows Media Player.

  • The slow down feature in windows media player works like a charm with these files.  The audio is excellent and the video maintains its quality at slower speeds.

  • You can't play them on a mac unless
    • You have means of converting wmv files to the mp4 format, or
    • You have the VLC Media Player or something like it installed on your mac (the VLC player can play both mp4 and wmv).

The Bottom LineIf you have a mac, you need the mp4 format.  The only exception to this is if you have a file converter or a special player installed that you know will play wmv files as well as mp4. If you have a PC, you can take your pick; but if the slow-down feature is important to you, you'll be happier with the wmv format.
